Paraplejía
La paraplégia es un impedimento en la función motora o sensorial de las extremidades inferiores. La palabra proviene del griego iónico: παραπληγίη "medio llamativo". Por lo general, es causada por una lesión de la médula espinal o una condición congénita como la espina bífida que afecta a los elementos neuronales del canal espinal. El área del canal espinal que se ve afectada en la paraplejía es la región torácica, lumbar o sacra. Si las cuatro extremidades están afectadas por parálisis, la tetraplegia es la terminología apropiada. Si sólo se afecta una extremidad, el término correcto es monoplegia. La paraplejía espástica es una forma de paraplejía definida por la espasticidad de los músculos afectados, en lugar de parálisis flácida.
