Movimiento browniano o pedesis es el movimiento aleatorio de partículas suspendidas en un fluido resultante de su colisión con los átomos rápidos o moléculas en el gas o líquido. El término "movimiento browniano" también puede referirse al modelo matemático utilizado para describir tales movimientos aleatorios, que a menudo se llama teoría de partículas. Este fenómeno de transporte lleva el nombre del botánico Robert Brown. En 1827, mientras miraba a través del microscopio las partículas que se encontraban en los granos de polen en el agua, observó que las partículas se movían a través del agua, pero no era capaz de determinar los mecanismos que causaron este movimiento.
