Un pendiente de la cúpula principal de Santa Sofía Un pendiente es un dispositivo constructivo que permite colocar una cúpula circular sobre una habitación cuadrada o una cúpula elíptica sobre una habitación rectangular. Los pendientes, que son segmentos triangulares de una esfera, se estrechan hasta los puntos en la parte inferior y se extienden en la parte superior para establecer la base continua circular o elíptica necesaria para la cúpula. En la mampostería los pendentiles reciben así el peso de la cúpula, concentrándola en las cuatro esquinas donde puede ser recibida por los pilares debajo. Antes del desarrollo de la pendencia, se había empleado el dispositivo de corbelling o el uso del squinch en las esquinas de una habitación. Los colgantes se usaban comúnmente en iglesias ortodoxas, renacentistas y barrocas, con un tambor con ventanas a menudo insertadas entre los colgantes y la cúpula. La primera experimentación con pendentives fue hecha en la construcción romana de la bóveda que comenzaba en el 2do-3ro siglo AD, mientras que el desarrollo completo de la forma fue alcanzado en el 6to siglo Hagia Sophia romano del este en Constantinople.
