Pentarquía
La "pentarquía" es un término en la historia del cristianismo para la idea del dominio universal sobre toda la cristiandad por los jefes de las cinco grandes sedes episcopales del Imperio Romano: Roma, Constantinopla, Alejandría, Antioquia y Jerusalén. La idea surgió debido a la prominencia política y eclesiástica de estas cinco visiones, pero el concepto de su autoridad universal y exclusiva estaba firmemente ligado a la estructura administrativa del Imperio Romano. La idea de la pentarquía se expresó por primera vez de manera tangible en las leyes del emperador Justiniano I, particularmente en Novella 131. El Concilio Quinisext de 692 le dio reconocimiento formal y clasificó las vistas en orden de preeminencia. Especialmente después de Quinisext, la pentarquía fue por lo menos aceptada filosóficamente en el cristianismo oriental, pero generalmente no en Occidente, que rechazó el Concilio. La mayor autoridad de estos ve en relación con los demás estaba ligada a su prominencia política y eclesiástica; Todos estaban ubicados en importantes ciudades y regiones del Imperio Romano y eran importantes centros de la Iglesia Cristiana.
