Phenocryst
Un fenocristal es un cristal relativamente grande y usualmente visible, claramente más grande que los granos de la roca de una roca ígnea. Estas rocas que tienen una diferencia distinta en el tamaño de los cristales se llaman pórfidos, y el adjetivo porfirítico se utiliza para describirlos. Los fenocristales suelen tener formas euédricas, ya sea debido al crecimiento temprano dentro de un magma, oa través de la recristalización posterior al emplazamiento. Normalmente, el término fenocristal no se usa a menos que los cristales sean directamente observables, lo que a veces se indica como mayor de 0,5 milímetros de diámetro. Los fenocristales por debajo de este nivel, pero aún más grandes que los cristales de masa, se denominan microphenocrysts. Fenocristales muy grandes se denominan megafenocristales. Algunas rocas contienen microphenocrysts y megaphenocrysts. En las rocas metamórficas, los cristales similares a los fenocristales se llaman porfiroblastos.
