Un pigmento es un material que cambia el color de la luz reflejada o transmitida como el resultado de la absorción selectiva de la longitud de onda. Este proceso físico difiere de la fluorescencia, fosforescencia y otras formas de luminiscencia, en las que un material emite luz. Un pigmento debe tener una alta resistencia a la tinción en relación con los materiales que colorea. Debe ser estable en forma sólida a temperatura ambiente. Para aplicaciones industriales, así como en las artes, la permanencia y la estabilidad son propiedades deseables. Los pigmentos que no son permanentes se llaman fugitivos. Los pigmentos fugitivos se desvanecen con el tiempo, o con la exposición a la luz, mientras que algunos eventualmente ennegrecen. Los pigmentos se utilizan para colorear la pintura, la tinta, el plástico, la tela, los cosméticos, el alimento y otros materiales. La mayoría de los pigmentos utilizados en la fabricación y las artes visuales son colorantes secos, por lo general molido en un polvo fino.
