Píndaro
Píndaro, era un poeta lírico griego antiguo de Tebas. De los nueve poetas líricos canónicos de la antigua Grecia, su obra es la mejor conservada. Quintiliano escribió: «De los nueve poetas líricos, Píndaro es, con mucho, el más grande, en virtud de su magnificencia inspirada, la belleza de sus pensamientos y figuras, la rica exuberancia de su lengua y materia y su oleada de elocuencia, características que Como Horace lo sostuvo con razón, lo hacen inimitable. Sus poemas sin embargo también pueden parecer difíciles e incluso peculiares. El dramaturgo cómico ateniense Eupolis señaló una vez que "ya están reducidos al silencio por la falta de inclinación de la multitud por el aprendizaje elegante". Algunos eruditos de la época moderna también encontraron su poesía desconcertante, al menos hasta el descubrimiento en 1896 de algunos poemas de su rival Bacchylides, cuando las comparaciones de su trabajo demostraron que muchas de las idiosincrasias de Pindar son típicas de los géneros arcaicos más que del propio poeta . El brillo de su poesía comenzó a ser más ampliamente apreciado. Sin embargo, su estilo sigue desafiando al lector casual y sigue siendo un poeta muy admirado aunque en gran parte no leído.
