En economía, el valor actual, también conocido como valor presente descontado, es una cantidad futura de dinero que se ha descontado para reflejar su valor actual, como si existiera hoy. El valor actual es siempre menor o igual que el valor futuro porque el dinero tiene un potencial de ganancia de intereses, una característica conocida como el valor temporal del dinero. El valor de tiempo se puede describir con la frase simplificada, "Un dólar hoy vale más que un dólar mañana". Aquí, "vale más" significa que su valor es mayor.
