Profase
Prophase, del griego antiguo πρό y φάσις, es una etapa de mitosis en la que la cromatina se condensa en doble forma de barras estructuras llamadas cromosomas en los que la cromatina se hace visible. Este proceso, llamado condensación de cromatina, está involucrado con el complejo de condensina. Dado que el material genético se ha replicado en la interfase previa del ciclo celular, hay dos copias idénticas de cada cromosoma en la célula. Esas copias se llaman cromátidas hermanas y están unidas entre sí en un elemento de ADN presente en cada cromosoma llamado centromero. También durante la profase, la tinción con giemsa se puede aplicar para provocar la formación de bandas G en los cromosomas. Un organelo importante en la mitosis es el centrosoma, el centro de organización de los microtúbulos en los metazoos. Durante la profase, los dos centrosomas, que se replican independientemente de la mitosis, tienen su actividad de microtúbulos aumentada debido al reclutamiento de γ-tubulina. Los centrosomas serán empujados aparte a los extremos opuestos del núcleo de la célula por la acción de los motores moleculares que actúan en los microtúbulos. Básicamente, la cromatina en el núcleo se convierte en cromosomas.
