Membrillo
El membrillo / kwɪns / es el único miembro del género Cydonia en la familia Rosaceae. Es un árbol de hoja caduca pequeño que lleva una fruta del pome, similar en aspecto a una pera, y amarillo-dorado brillante cuando es maduro. A lo largo de la historia, la fruta cocida se ha utilizado como alimento, pero el árbol también se cultiva por su atractivo color rosa pálido y otras cualidades ornamentales. El árbol crece 5 a 8 metros de altura y 4 a 6 metros de ancho. El fruto es de 7 a 12 centímetros de largo y 6 a 9 centímetros de ancho. Es nativo a las laderas rocosas y los márgenes del arbolado en Asia sudoccidental, Turquía e Irán aunque se puede cultivar con éxito en las latitudes tan al norte como Escocia. No debe confundirse con su pariente, el membrillo floreciente. La fruta inmadura es verde con pubescencia densa grisácea, la mayoría de los cuales se frota antes de la madurez a finales de otoño, cuando el fruto cambia de color a amarillo con carne dura, fuertemente perfumada. Las hojas se disponen alternativamente, simples, de 6-11 cm de largo, con un margen entero y densamente pubescentes con finos pelos blancos. Las flores, producidas en primavera después de las hojas, son blancas o rosadas, de 5 cm de diámetro, con cinco pétalos.
