La reducción del cálculo de instrucciones, o RISC, es una estrategia de diseño de CPU basada en la comprensión de que el conjunto de instrucciones simplificado proporciona un mayor rendimiento cuando se combina con una arquitectura de microprocesador capaz de ejecutar esas instrucciones usando menos ciclos de microprocesador por instrucción. Una computadora basada en esta estrategia es una computadora de conjunto de instrucciones reducida, también llamada RISC. La arquitectura opuesta se denomina computación de conjunto de instrucciones complejas, es decir, CISC. Varias sugerencias se han hecho con respecto a una definición precisa de RISC, pero el concepto general es el de un sistema que utiliza un pequeño conjunto de instrucciones altamente optimizado, en lugar de un conjunto más especializado de instrucciones que se encuentran a menudo en otros tipos de arquitecturas. Otro rasgo común es que los sistemas RISC utilizan la arquitectura load / store, donde la memoria se accede normalmente sólo a través de instrucciones específicas, en lugar de acceder como parte de otras instrucciones como add. Aunque una serie de sistemas de los años 60 y 70 han sido identificados como precursores de RISC, la versión moderna del diseño data de los años ochenta.
