Jengibre
La raíz de jengibre o jengibre es el rizoma de la planta Zingiber officinale, consumido como un manjar, medicina o especias. Presta su nombre a su género y familia. Otros miembros notables de esta familia de plantas son la cúrcuma, cardamomo y galangal. Las dicotiledóneas distantes en el género Asarum tienen el nombre común de jengibre silvestre debido a su gusto similar. El jengibre es indígena del sudeste asiático, de donde se extiende a las islas de las especias, el subcontinente indio y otras partes de Asia, y posteriormente a África Occidental y al Caribe. Las raíces del nombre de jengibre están en las antiguas lenguas indias como el sánscrito y el malayalam. El jengibre apareció en Europa, vía la India, en el 1ro siglo CE como resultado del comercio lucrativo de las especias. Los esfuerzos comerciales del Imperio Romano, que importaba todo tipo de especias de la India, llevaban el jengibre a la Roma Antigua, de donde se extendía por toda Europa.
