Las islas Ryukyu / riuːkjuː /, conocidas en japonés como las islas Nansei y también conocidas como el Arco Ryukyu, son una cadena de islas japonesas volcánicas que se extienden al suroeste de Kyushu a Taiwán: las islas Ōsumi, Tokara, Amami, Okinawa y Sakishima, Con Yonaguni el más meridional. La más grande de las islas es Okinawa. Las islas tienen un clima subtropical con inviernos suaves y veranos calurosos. La precipitación es muy alta y se ve afectada por la temporada de lluvias y los tifones. Excepto las islas distantes de Daitō, la cadena de la isla tiene dos fronteras geológicas importantes, el estrecho de Tokara entre las islas de Tokara y de Amami, y la brecha de Kerama entre las islas de Okinawa y de Miyako. Las islas más allá del estrecho de Tokara se caracterizan por sus arrecifes de coral. Las islas Ōsumi y Tokara, la más septentrional de las islas, caen bajo la esfera cultural de la región de Kyushu de Japón; La gente es étnicamente japonesa y habla una variación del dialecto de Kagoshima de japonés.
