Los skimmers, Rynchopidae, son una pequeña familia de pájaros parecidos a las charcas en el orden Charadriiformes, que también incluye a los limícolas, gaviotas y auks. La familia se compone de tres especies que se encuentran en el sur de Asia, África y las Américas. Las tres especies son las únicas aves con billetes desiguales distintivos con la mandíbula inferior más larga que la superior. Esta notable adaptación les permite pescar de una manera única, volando bajo y rápido sobre arroyos. Su inferior mandíbula skims o rebanadas sobre la superficie del agua listo para encajar a presión cualquier pequeño pescado incapaz de dart claro. Los skimmers se incluyen a veces dentro de la familia Laridae de la gaviota pero separados en otros tratamientos que los consideran como grupo de la hermana de los golondrinas de mar. El skimmer negro tiene una adaptación adicional y es la única especie de pájaro conocida por tener pupilas en forma de hendidura. Sus proyectos de ley caen dentro de su campo de visión binocular y les permiten posicionar cuidadosamente su factura y capturar presas. Son ágiles en vuelo y se reúnen en grandes bandadas a lo largo de los ríos y bancos de arena costera. Son especies tropicales y subtropicales que ponen 3-6 huevos en las playas arenosas. La hembra incuba los huevos.
