Soma
Soma, o Haoma, de Proto-Indo-Iraní * sauma-, era una bebida ritual védica de importancia entre los Indo-iraníes tempranos, y las subsecuentes culturas védicas y persas mayores. Se menciona frecuentemente en el Rigveda, cuya Mandala Soma contiene 114 himnos, muchos elogiando sus cualidades energizantes. En el Avesta, Haoma tiene todo el Yašt 20 y Yasna 9-11 dedicado a él. Se describe como preparado por la extracción de jugo de los tallos de una planta determinada. Tanto en la tradición védica como en la zoroastriana, el nombre de la bebida y la planta son los mismos, y también personificados como una divinidad, formando los tres una unidad religiosa o mitológica. Ha habido mucha especulación acerca de lo que es más probable que haya sido la identidad de la planta original. No existe un consenso sólido sobre la cuestión, aunque algunos expertos occidentales fuera de las tradiciones religiosas védicas y avestanas parecen ahora favorecer una especie de efedra, quizás Ephedra sinica.
