Spermatheca
La espermatheca, también llamada receptaculum seminis, es un órgano del tracto reproductivo femenino en insectos, algunos moluscos, gusanos oligochaeta y ciertos otros invertebrados y vertebrados. Su propósito es recibir y almacenar el esperma del macho o, en el caso de los hermafroditas, el componente masculino del cuerpo, y puede ser a veces el sitio de la fertilización cuando los ovocitos están suficientemente desarrollados. Algunas especies de animales tienen espermatecas múltiples. Por ejemplo, ciertas especies de lombrices de tierra tienen cuatro pares de espermatecas, un par cada uno en los segmentos 6, 7, 8 y 9. Las espermatecas reciben y almacenan los espermatozoides de otra lombriz de tierra durante la cópula. Están revestidos de epitelio y son de forma variable: algunos son tubos delgados y muy en espiral, mientras que otros son vagos y salientes del principal tracto reproductivo. Es una de las muchas variaciones en la reproducción sexual. Un apicultor puede examinar la espermateca de una abeja reina para averiguar si ha recibido esperma de un macho.
