Bazo
El bazo es un órgano que se encuentra prácticamente en todos los vertebrados. De estructura similar a un ganglio linfático grande, actúa principalmente como un filtro de sangre. Es posible eliminar el bazo sin poner en peligro la vida. El bazo juega un papel importante con respecto a los glóbulos rojos y al sistema inmunológico. Elimina viejos glóbulos rojos y mantiene una reserva de sangre, que puede ser valiosa en caso de shock hemorrágico, y también recicla hierro. Como parte del sistema de fagocitos mononucleares, metaboliza la hemoglobina extraída de eritrocitos senescentes. La porción de globina de la hemoglobina se degrada a sus aminoácidos constitutivos, y la porción de hemo se metaboliza a bilirrubina, que se elimina en el hígado. El bazo sintetiza anticuerpos en su pulpa blanca y elimina las bacterias recubiertas de anticuerpos y las células sanguíneas recubiertas de anticuerpos mediante la circulación sanguínea y linfática. Un estudio publicado en 2009 utilizando ratones encontró que el bazo contiene, en su reserva, la mitad de los monocitos del cuerpo dentro de la pulpa roja. Estos monocitos, al trasladarse a tejido dañado, se convierten en células dendríticas y macrófagos, al tiempo que promueven la cicatrización del tejido.
