Cerebro dividido
El cerebro dividido es un término laico para describir el resultado cuando el cuerpo calloso que conecta los dos hemisferios del cerebro se corta en cierto grado. Es una asociación de síntomas producidos por la interrupción o la interferencia con la conexión entre los hemisferios del cerebro. La operación quirúrgica para producir esta condición es el resultado de la transección del cuerpo calloso, y suele ser un último recurso para tratar la epilepsia refractaria. Inicialmente se realizan callosotomías parciales; Si esta operación no tiene éxito, se realiza una calosotomía completa para mitigar el riesgo de lesiones físicas accidentales reduciendo la gravedad y la violencia de las crisis epilépticas. Antes de usar callosotomías, la epilepsia es tratada a través de medios farmacéuticos. Después de la cirugía, a menudo se realizan evaluaciones neuropsicológicas. Cuando se muestra a los pacientes con cerebro dividido una imagen sólo en su campo visual izquierdo (la mitad izquierda de lo que ambos ojos capturan (ver el tracto óptico)), no pueden nombrar vocalmente lo que han visto.
