Subducción
En geología, la subducción es el proceso que tiene lugar en los límites convergentes por el cual una placa tectónica se mueve bajo otra placa tectónica y se hunde en el manto a medida que convergen las placas. Las regiones en las que se produce este proceso se conocen como zonas de subducción. Las tasas de subducción son típicamente centímetros por año, con un promedio de convergencia de aproximadamente dos a ocho centímetros por año. Las placas incluyen la corteza oceánica y la corteza continental. Las zonas estables de la subducción implican la litosfera oceánica de una placa que resbala debajo de la litosfera continental o de la litosfera oceánica de otra placa debido a la densidad más alta de la litosfera oceánica. Es decir, la litosfera subductada es siempre oceánica, mientras que la litosfera excesiva puede o no ser oceánica. Las zonas de subducción son sitios con altas tasas de volcanismo, terremotos y construcción de montañas. La orogénesis, o construcción de montaña, se produce cuando grandes piezas de material en la placa de subducción se presionan en la placa de sobre-montar o cuando la contracción subhorizontal ocurre en la placa de sobre-montar.
