Superstate
Un superestado es una aglomeración de naciones y / o estados, a menudo lingüística y étnicamente diversa, bajo una única estructura político-administrativa. Esto es distinto del concepto de superpotencia, aunque estos son frecuentemente vistos juntos. También es distinto del concepto de imperio, donde una nación domina a otras naciones a través del poder militar, político y económico, como en el Imperio Romano, aunque un imperio también puede ser un superestado, como en la antigua Persia, el Imperio ruso, la India y China. Un ejemplo de un pequeño superestado sería la república de Yugoslavia antes de su ruptura al final de la guerra fría. Un ejemplo de un antiguo superestado sería China, bajo varias dinastías. Los euroescépticos argumentan que la Unión Europea es un ejemplo actual de un superestado emergente. Estados multinacionales como Canadá y la Federación de Rusia no se consideran superestados. La ex Unión Soviética, aunque constitucionalmente se definió como la unión de las repúblicas, era de facto un superestado debido a una gran diversidad cultural y lingüística entre sus etnias habitadas, nunca se identificaron realmente como la única nación soviética a pesar de la doctrina oficial.
