El río Sutlej es el más largo de los cinco ríos que atraviesan la histórica región de cruce de Punjab en el norte de la India y Pakistán. Está situado al norte de la cordillera de Vindhya, al sur del segmento Hindu Kush del Himalaya, y al este de la Cordillera Central de Sulaiman en Pakistán. El Sutlej es a veces conocido como el Río Rojo. Es el afluente más oriental del río Indo. Su fuente es el lago Rakshastal en el Tíbet. Desde allí, bajo el nombre tibetano Langqên Zangbo, fluye al principio oeste-noroeste durante unos 260 kilómetros hasta el puerto de Shipki La, entrando en la India en el estado de Himachal Pradesh. A continuación, gira ligeramente, rumbo oeste-suroeste durante unos 360 kilómetros para cumplir con el río Beas, cerca de Makhu, distrito de Firozpur, estado de Punjab. Continuando hacia el oeste-suroeste, el Sutlej entra en Pakistán a unos 15 kilómetros al este de Bhedian Kalan, distrito de Kasur, provincia de Punjab, continuando hacia el suroeste para regar el antiguo e histórico estado bahá'ípur principesco. A unos 17 kilómetros al norte de Uch Sharif, el Sutlej se une con el río Chenab, formando el río Panjnad, que finalmente desemboca en el río Indus a unos 100 kilómetros al oeste de la ciudad de Bahawalpur.
