Testículo
El testículo es la gónada masculina en animales. Al igual que los ovarios a los que son homólogos, los testículos son componentes tanto del sistema reproductivo como del sistema endocrino. Las funciones primarias de los testículos son producir espermatozoides y producir andrógenos, principalmente testosterona. Ambas funciones del testículo están influenciadas por las hormonas gonadotrópicas producidas por la pituitaria anterior. La hormona luteinizante da como resultado la liberación de testosterona. La presencia de testosterona y hormona folículo estimulante es necesaria para apoyar la espermatogénesis. También se ha demostrado en estudios en animales que si los testículos están expuestos a niveles demasiado altos o demasiado bajos de estrógenos, la espermatogénesis puede interrumpirse hasta tal punto que los animales se vuelvan estériles.
