La tiroides también produce calcitonina, que desempeña un papel en la homeostasis del calcio. La producción hormonal de la tiroides está regulada por la hormona estimulante del tiroides (TSH) producida por la pituitaria anterior, la cual es regulada por la hormona liberadora de tirotropina (TRH) producida por el hipotálamo.
