Hormona tiroidea
Las hormonas tiroideas, la triyodotironina y su prohormona, la tiroxina, son las hormonas a base de tirosina producidas por la glándula tiroides que son los principales responsables de la regulación del metabolismo. El yodo es necesario para la producción de T3 y T4. Una deficiencia de yodo conduce a una disminución de la producción de T3 y T4, aumenta el tejido tiroideo y causará la enfermedad conocida como bocio. La forma principal de la hormona tiroidea en la sangre es la tiroxina, que tiene una vida media más larga que T3. La proporción de T4 a T3 liberada en la sangre es aproximadamente de 20 a 1. T4 se convierte en la T3 activa dentro de las células por deiodinasas. Estos se procesan adicionalmente mediante descarboxilación y desiodación para producir yodotironamina y tiro- minamina. Las tres isoformas de las desiodinasas son enzimas que contienen selenio, por lo que el selenio en la dieta es esencial para la producción de T3.
