Muelle de torsión
Un muelle de torsión es un resorte que funciona por torsión o torsión; Es decir, un objeto elástico flexible que almacena energía mecánica cuando está retorcido. Cuando está retorcido, ejerce una fuerza en la dirección opuesta, proporcional a la cantidad que se retuerce. Hay dos tipos. Una barra de torsión es una barra recta de metal o goma que se somete a torsión alrededor de su eje por el par aplicado en sus extremos. Una forma más delicada utilizada en instrumentos sensibles, llamada fibra de torsión, consiste en una fibra de seda, vidrio o cuarzo bajo tensión, que se retuerce alrededor de su eje. El otro tipo, un resorte de torsión helicoidal, es una varilla o alambre de metal en forma de hélice que está sometida a torsión alrededor del eje de la bobina por fuerzas laterales aplicadas a sus extremos, torciendo la bobina más apretada. Esta terminología puede ser confusa porque en un resorte helicoidal de torsión las fuerzas que actúan sobre el alambre son realmente tensiones de flexión, no tensiones de torsión.
