Hoy en día, el turismo es una fuente importante de ingresos para muchos países y afecta a la economía de los países de origen y de acogida, en algunos casos es de vital importancia. El turismo sufrió como resultado de una fuerte desaceleración económica de la recesión de fines de 2000, entre el segundo semestre de 2008 y finales de 2009, y el brote del virus de la influenza H1N1. Luego se recuperó lentamente, con llegadas de turistas internacionales superó el hito mil millones de turistas en todo el mundo por primera vez en la historia en 2012.
