Tremolite es un miembro del grupo de anfíboles de minerales de silicato con la composición: ☐ Ca2Si8O222. Tremolita forma por metamorfismo de sedimentos ricos en dolomita y cuarzo. La tremolita forma una serie con actinolita y ferro-actinolita. Trémolita de magnesio puro es blanco cremoso, pero el color de los grados de verde oscuro con el aumento de contenido de hierro. Tiene una dureza en la escala de Mohs de 5 a 6. Nephrite, uno de los dos minerales del jade de piedras preciosas, es una variedad verde de tremolita. La forma fibrosa de la trémolita es uno de los seis tipos reconocidos de asbesto. Este material es tóxico y la inhalación de las fibras puede conducir a asbestosis, cáncer de pulmón y mesotelioma pleural y peritoneal. Trémolita fibrosa se encuentra a veces como un contaminante en vermiculita, crisotilo y talco.
