Trichinella
Trichinella es el género de lombrices parásitas del filo Nematoda que causa la triquinosis. Los miembros de este género se llaman a menudo gusanos trichinella o trichina. Una característica de Nematoda es el tracto digestivo unidireccional, con un pseudocoelom. El género se reconoció por primera vez en forma larvaria en 1835. Las larvas L1 viven en una célula del músculo esquelético modificada. Los gusanos adultos ocupan una porción de membrana del epitelio columnar, viviendo como parásitos intramulticelulares. Se han reportado infecciones con este género en más de 150 diferentes hospedadores infectados natural o experimentalmente. Se ha demostrado que tiene una distribución mundial en animales domésticos y / o silvestres. Trichinella es conocido como el parásito nematodo humano más pequeño, sin embargo, es también el más grande de todos los parásitos intracelulares. La ingestión oral de tejido contaminado con larvas es la vía habitual de infección, pero la transmisión congénita y mamaria puede ocurrir en ratas.
