Intocabilidad
Intocabilidad es la práctica del ostracismo de un grupo segregándolos de la corriente principal por la costumbre social o el mandato legal. El grupo excluido podría ser uno que no aceptara las normas del grupo excluyente e incluyera históricamente a extranjeros, tribus nómadas, violadores de la ley y criminales y aquellos que padecen una enfermedad contagiosa. También podría ser un grupo, que no aceptara el cambio de costumbres forzado por un determinado grupo. Esta exclusión era un método para castigar a los infractores de la ley y también protegía a las sociedades tradicionales contra el contagio de extraños e infectados. Un miembro del grupo excluido es conocido como un intocable. El término se asocia comúnmente con el tratamiento de las comunidades dalit, que se consideran "contaminantes" entre la gente de Asia meridional, pero el término se ha utilizado también para otros grupos, como el Burakumin de Japón, Cagots en Europa o el Al-Akhdam en Yemen. La intocabilidad se ha vuelto ilegal en la India después de la independencia, y los dalits tienen poderes sustanciales, aunque persisten algunos prejuicios contra ellos, especialmente en los bolsillos rurales dominados por otros grupos de castas atrasados.
