La primera definición de valencia en el diccionario es una propiedad de átomos o grupos, igual al número de átomos de hidrógeno con los que el átomo o grupo podría combinarse o desplazarse en compuestos formadores. Otra definición de valencia es la cantidad de frases nominales de satélite con las que se combina un verbo. La valencia también es el número de sitios de unión a antígeno en una molécula de anticuerpo.
