Un podcast es un medio digital que consiste en una serie episódica de archivos de audio, video, PDF o ePub suscritos y descargados a través de la sindicación web o transmitidos en línea a una computadora o dispositivo móvil. La palabra es un neologismo y portmanteau derivados de la "difusión" y "pod" del éxito del iPod, ya que los podcasts de audio a menudo se escuchan en los reproductores de medios portátiles. Merriam Webster define Podcast: un programa disponible en formato digital para descarga automática a través de Internet. Una lista de todos los archivos de audio o video asociados a una serie dada se mantiene centralmente en el servidor del distribuidor como un feed web y el oyente o espectador emplea Software de aplicación de cliente especial, conocido como podcatcher, que puede acceder a este feed web, comprobar si hay actualizaciones y descargar cualquier archivo nuevo de la serie. Este proceso se puede automatizar para que los nuevos archivos se descarguen automáticamente, lo que puede parecer al usuario como si el contenido se está transmitiendo o "empujado" a ellos. Los archivos se almacenan localmente en el equipo del usuario u otro dispositivo listo para su uso sin conexión, dando acceso simple y conveniente al contenido.
