Son depredadores de insectos de cuerpo blando, como orugas, escarabajos japoneses, etc., que perforan con el pico para inyectar fluidos salivales que disuelven el tejido blando. Debido a que la mayoría de sus presas son plagas, los errores de rueda se consideran insectos benéficos, aunque pueden infligir una mordida dolorosa si se manejan descuidadamente. Los insectos de ruedas son comunes en el este de Norteamérica, aunque muchas personas en la región nunca los han visto. Están camuflados y muy tímidos, escondiéndose siempre que sea posible. Tienen alas membranous, permitiendo el vuelo torpe, ruidoso que puede ser confundido fácilmente para el vuelo de un saltamontes grande.
