Curare / kjuːrɑːriː / es un nombre común para varios venenos de la flecha del alcaloide del extracto de la planta que originan de central y de Suramérica. Estos venenos funcionan por inhibición competitiva y reversible del receptor nicotínico de acetilcolina, que es un subtipo del receptor de acetilcolina que se encuentra en la unión neuromuscular. Esto provoca debilidad de los músculos esqueléticos y, cuando se administra en una dosis suficiente, muerte eventual por asfixia debido a la parálisis del diafragma. Según el esquema de clasificación del farmacólogo Prof. Rudolf Boehm de 1895, los tres tipos principales de curare son: ▪ tubo o curare de bambú. ▪ potar curare. Protocurarine es el ingrediente activo; La protocurina es débilmente tóxica, y la protocuridina no es tóxica. ▪ calabaza o curare de calabaza. De estos tres tipos, algunas fórmulas pertenecientes al curare del tubo son las más tóxicas, en relación con sus valores de LD50.
