Xanthopterina
Xanthopterin es un sólido amarillo, cristalino que se produce principalmente en las alas de las mariposas y en la orina de los mamíferos. Los microorganismos pequeños lo convierten en ácido fólico. Es el producto final de un compuesto de pteridina no conjugado e inhibe el crecimiento de los linfocitos producidos por la concanavalina. Los altos niveles de la sustancia química se encontraron en pacientes con enfermedad hepática y hemólisis, este último aumento de los niveles en un 35%. Se ha sugerido que el avispón oriental utiliza la xanthopterina como molécula de recolección de luz para transformar la luz en energía eléctrica, lo que puede explicar por qué los insectos son más activos cuando la intensidad de la luz es mayor. Aunque no se ha determinado ningún mecanismo bioquímico explícito para este sistema de conversión de luz-energía animal, sigue siendo un área activa e importante de investigación científica (Plotkin et al., Naturwissenschaften (2010) 97: 1067-1076).
