Xileno
Un xileno es un hidrocarburo aromático que consiste en un anillo de benceno con dos sustituyentes metilo. Los tres xilenos isómeros tienen cada uno una fórmula molecular de C8H10, aunque la fórmula semi-estructural más informativa C6H42 también se usa comúnmente. Los xilenos son productos petroquímicos importantes, producidos por reformado catalítico y también por carbonización del carbón en la fabricación de combustible de coque. Representando alrededor del 0,5-1% del petróleo crudo, los xilenos se encuentran en pequeñas cantidades en la gasolina y los combustibles de aviones. Los xilenos se producen principalmente como parte de los aromáticos BTX extraídos del producto de reformado catalítico conocido como "reformado". La mezcla es un líquido ligeramente graso e incoloro comúnmente encontrado como disolvente. Fue nombrado en 1851, habiendo sido descubierto como un componente de alquitrán de madera. Se producen anualmente varios millones de toneladas. En 2011, un consorcio mundial comenzó la construcción de una de las mayores plantas de xileno del mundo en Singapur.
