विशेष—फ्रांक नाम का जरमन जातियों का एक जत्था था जो
ईसा की तीसरी शताब्दी में तीन दलों में विभक्त हुआ ।
इनमें से एख दल दक्षिण की ओर बढ़ा और गाल (फ्रांस
का पुराना नाम) से रोमन राज्य उठाकर उसने वहाँ अपना
अधिकार जमाया । तभी से फ्रांस नाम पड़ा । सनू १०९६
और १२५० ई० के बीच यूरोप के ईसाइयों ने ईसा की
जन्मभूमि को तुर्कों के हाथ से निकालने के लिये कई चढ़ाइयाँ
कीं । फ्रांक शब्द का परिचय तभी से तुर्कों को हुआ और वे
यूरोप से आनेवालों को फिरंगी कहने लगे । धीरे धीरे यह
शब्द अरब, फारस आदि होता हुआ हिंदुस्तान में आया ।
हिंदुस्तान में पहले पुर्तगाली दिखाई पड़े इससे इस शब्द का
प्रयोग बहुत दिनों तक उन्हीं के लिये होता रहा । फिर
यूरोपियन मात्र को फिरंगी कहने लगे ।
२. भावप्रकाश के अनुसार एक रोग । गरमी । आतशक ।
विशेष—पहले पहल भावप्रकाश में ही इस रोग का उल्लेख
दिखाई पड़ता है और किसी प्राचीन वैद्यक ग्रंथ में नहीं है ।
भावप्रकाश में लिखा है कि फिरंग नाम के देश में यह रोग
बहुत होता है इससे इसका नाम 'फिरंग' है । यह भी स्पष्ट
कहा गया है कि फिरंग रोग फिरंगी स्त्री के साथ संभोग करने
से हो जाता है । इस रोग के तीन भेद किए हैं—बाह्य
फिरंग, आभ्यंतर फिरंग और बहिरंतर्भव फिरंग । बाह्य
फिरंग, विस्फोटक के समान शरीर में फूट फूटकर निकलता
है और घाव या व्रण हो जाते हैं । यह सुखसाध्य है ।
आभ्यंतर फिंरग में संधि स्थानों में आमवात के समान शोथ
और वेदना होती है । यह कष्टसाध्य है । बहरितर्भव फिरंग
एक प्रकार से असाध्य है ।
