La retina es una capa de tejido sensible a la luz que cubre la superficie del ojo. La óptica del ojo produce una imagen natural en la retina que es muy similar a su función con una película de cámara. Las células de bastón funcionan principalmente en condiciones de poca luz y proporcionan una visión en blanco y negro, mientras que las células de cono admiten la visión diurna y la observación del color.
