Jedno z większych centrów handlowych Bliskiego Wschodu. Węzeł komunikacyjny - skrzyżowanie szlaków kolejowych i drogowych, międzynarodowy port lotniczy, przez miasto przebiega rurociąg z Homsu do Latakii. Ośrodek nauki i kultury - uniwersytet, muzułmańska szkoła teologiczna, szkoła muzyczna. Tradycja muzułmańska i judaistyczna podają, że podczas wędrówki z Ur do Kanaanu na fortecznym wzgórzu odpoczywał biblijny patriarcha Abraham.
