Atol

Atolón: tipo de isla de coral plano ubicada en el océano, que consiste en un anillo de coral en forma de una depresión central. Esta depresión, llamada laguna, puede ser parte de una isla, un cuerpo de agua pequeño pero separado o conectado al mar. El atolón está formado por el crecimiento del arrecife de coral alrededor de la isla volcánica. Los arrecifes de coral están formados por millones de organismos vivos, pólipos. Los pólipos moribundos dejan esqueletos de piedra caliza que forman una estructura compacta. Con el tiempo, bajo la influencia del peso del anillo de piedra caliza, la isla desciende y se sumerge gradualmente en el agua. El anillo que queda por encima de la superficie está erosionado. Uno de sus productos es la arena, que puede crecer las plantas. Los restos de la planta forman el suelo y así la isla crece. En el lado externo del atolón, se forma una playa en forma de ola. Cae abruptamente a las profundidades. Las playas en el lado de la laguna son mucho más anchas, y el agua es en su mayoría poco profunda. El nombre del atolón basado en divehi, utilizado en las Maldivas, fue popularizado por Charles Darwin.

Atol – typ płaskiej wyspy koralowej położonej na oceanie, składającej się z rafy koralowej w kształcie pierścienia otaczającego centralną depresję. Depresja ta nazywana laguną może być częścią wyłonionej wyspy, stanowić niewielki, lecz odrębny zbiornik wodny lub też być połączona z morzem. Atol powstaje na skutek przyrastania rafy koralowej wokół wyspy wulkanicznej. Rafę koralową tworzą miliony żywych organizmów - polipów. Obumierające polipy pozostawiają po sobie wapienne szkielety stanowiące zwartą strukturę. Wraz z upływem czasu, pod wpływem ciężaru wapiennego pierścienia wyspa obniża się i stopniowo zanurza w wodzie. Pierścień pozostający ponad powierzchnią ulega erozji. Jednym z jej produktów jest piasek, na którym mogą rozwijać się rośliny. Szczątki roślin tworzą glebę i w ten sposób wyspa rozrasta się. Po zewnętrznej stronie atolu tworzy się kształtowana przez fale plaża. Opada ona stromo ku głębinie. Plaże od strony laguny są znacznie szersze, a woda przeważnie płytka. Nazwę atol pochodzącą z języka divehi, używanego na Malediwach, spopularyzował Karol Darwin.
