Los elastómeros son polímeros poliméricos o naturales que son capaces de deformación reversible bajo la influencia de fuerzas mecánicas, con la continuidad de su estructura. Los elastómeros son un grupo más amplio de materiales que las encías, que son solo una clase de elastómeros. Elastomer posiada zdolność zmiany w szerokim zakresie swoich wymiarów w momencie gdy jest poddawany naprężeniom rozciągającym, ścinającym lub ściskającym oraz następnie powrót do poprzednich wymiarów. Np: niektóre rodzaje gum opartych na kauczukach silikonowych można rozciągnąć o 1000% pierwotnych wymiarów bez zerwania. Zdolność elastomerów do zmiany wymiarów wynika z ich specyficznej budowy chemicznej. Elastomery są usieciowanymi polimerami amorficznymi, które posiadają niską temperaturę zeszklenia, dużo poniżej temperatury pokojowej. Materiały polimerowe można sobie wyobrazić jako chaotyczną plątaninę bardzo długich i cienkich cząsteczek, która przypomina nieco ugotowanie spaghetti.
