Hanys - un nativo de la antigua parte prusiana de la Alta Silesia. Hanys es un autóctono, pero no gente de fuera de Silesia, que vive en Silesia y adoptó la cultura de Silesia. La palabra "hanys" viene del nombre alemán Hans como el equivalente polaco de Jan. Esta palabra sugeriría el origen alemán de los silesians. En Alemania, sin embargo, se estableció el término Wasserpolaken, el término Pejoratywne habitantes de Alta Silesia. Bliskimi znaczeniowo słowami do hanysa, są miejscowy i tutejszy, w znaczeniu stąd. Ślązacy z Czarnego Śląska stosują określenie gorol, nazywając tak mieszkańców sąsiadującego Zagłębia Dąbrowskiego i pozostałych części Polski oraz Polaków mieszkających na Górnym Śląsku. W województwie opolskim określenie takie zastępowane jest często słowem chadziaj/hadziaj.
