Negus

Negus: el título histórico y político de los gobernantes de Etiopía durante la monarquía. Uno de los títulos feudales etíopes más antiguos, porque ya estaba en uso en V-I en p.n. Desde la época del estado de Aksum, más tarde fue asumido por los gobernantes cristianos de Etiopía y se utilizó para los tiempos modernos. Negus, la mayoría de las veces solo formalmente, estaba sujeto a que el emperador llevara el título negusa negast, es decir, "rey de reyes", siendo en realidad un gobernante independiente. En el período de fuerte poder imperial en Etiopía, el poder del negus estaba disminuyendo, y creció durante los períodos de debilitamiento. Más tarde, el emperador podría otorgar el título negus a los gobernantes de Szeua, Gonder, Tigra y Godjam. Jeden z najstarszych feudalnych tytułów etiopskich, bowiem był w użyciu już w V-I w. p.n.e. od czasów państwa Aksum, został następnie przejęty przez chrześcijańskich władców Etiopii i był używany do czasów współczesnych. Negus, najczęściej tylko formalnie, podlegał cesarzowi noszącemu tytuł negusa negast, tj. "król królów", będąc faktycznie samodzielnym władcą. W okresie silnej władzy cesarskiej w Etiopii malała władza negusa, rosła zaś w okresach jej osłabienia. W późniejszym okresie cesarz mógł przyznawać tytuł negusa władcom prowincji Szeua, Gonder, Tigra oraz Godżam. Ostatnia koronacja na negusa odbyła się w roku 1928, kiedy to tytuł ten przybrał ras Tafari Makonnen, znany pod imieniem Haile Selassie.
