El grado Celsius designa la unidad de temperatura, así denominada en homenaje al astrónomo sueco Anders Celsius, que fue el primero en proponerla en 1742. La escala de temperatura Celsius posee dos puntos importantes, donde punto de congelación del agua corresponde al valor cero y el punto de ebullición corresponde al valor 100, observado a una presión atmosférica estándar, también llamada presión normal. Como existen cien graduaciones entre estos dos puntos de referencia, el término original para este sistema fue centígrado o centésimas. En 1948, el nombre del sistema fue oficialmente modificado para Celsius durante la IX Conferencia General de Pesos y Medidas, tanto en reconocimiento a Celsius y para eliminar la confusión causada por el conflicto de uso del prefijo centi del SI. Por lo tanto, no es conveniente decir "grado centígrado", sino, "grado Celsius".
