Algues
Les algues sont un groupe très vaste et diversifié d'organismes eucaryotes, allant des genres unicellulaires tels que Chlorella et les diatomées aux formes multicellulaires telles que le varech géant, une grande algue brune pouvant atteindre 50 mètres de longueur. La plupart sont autotrophes et manquent de nombreux types de cellules et tissus distincts dans les plantes terrestres telles que les stomates, le xylème et le phloème. Les algues marines les plus grandes et les plus complexes sont appelées les algues, tandis que les formes d'eau douce les plus complexes sont la Charophyta, une division des algues qui comprend la Spirogyra et les pierres. Il n'y a pas de définition généralement acceptée des algues. Une définition est que les algues "ont la chlorophylle comme leur principal pigment photosynthétique et n'ont pas de couverture stérile de cellules autour de leurs cellules reproductrices". D'autres auteurs excluent tous les procaryotes et ne considèrent donc pas les cyanobactéries comme des algues. Les algues constituent un groupe polyphylétique puisqu'elles n'incluent pas un ancêtre commun, et bien que leurs plastides semblent avoir une origine unique, des cyanobactéries, elles ont été acquises de différentes manières. Les algues vertes sont des exemples d'algues qui ont des chloroplastes primaires dérivés de cyanobactéries endosymbiotiques.
