L'analogie joue un rôle important dans la résolution de problèmes tels que la prise de décision, la perception, la mémoire, la créativité, l'émotion, l'explication et la communication. Cela dépend des tâches fondamentales telles que l'identification des lieux, des objets et des personnes, par exemple dans les systèmes de perception du visage et de reconnaissance faciale. On a soutenu que l'analogie est «le noyau de la connaissance».

Niels Bohr's model of the atom made an analogy between the atom and the solar system. Analogy plays a significant role in problem solving such as, decision making, perception, memory, creativity, emotion, explanation and communication. It lies behind basic tasks such as the identification of places, objects and people, for example, in face perception and facial recognition systems. It has been argued that analogy is "the core of cognition".
