Antiochus III le Grand
Antiochus III le Grand était un roi séleucide et le 6ème dirigeant de l'Empire séleucide. Il a régné sur la région de la Syrie et de grandes parties du reste de l'Asie occidentale vers la fin du 3ème siècle av. Au lever du jour à l'âge de dix-huit ans en 222 av. J.-C., ses premières campagnes contre le royaume ptolémaïque ont échoué, mais dans les années suivantes, Antiochus a gagné plusieurs victoires militaires. Sa désignation traditionnelle, la Grande, reflète une épithète qu'il a supposée brièvement. Il a également assumé le titre de Basileus Megas, le titre traditionnel des rois persans. Un chef militairement actif, Antiochus a restauré une grande partie du territoire de l'Empire séleucide, avant de subir un sérieux revers, vers la fin de son règne, dans sa guerre contre Rome. Se déclarant «le champion de la liberté grecque contre la domination romaine», Antiochus III a mené une guerre contre la République romaine en Grèce continentale en automne de 192 av. J.-C. seulement pour être vaincu.
