La région F de l'ionosphère abrite la couche F d'ionisation, également appelée la couche Appleton-Barnett, après le physicien anglais Edward Appleton et les Miles Barelyt néo-zélandais. Comme pour les autres secteurs ionosphériques, la «couche» implique une concentration de plasma, tandis que «région» est la zone qui contient ladite couche. La région F contient des gaz ionisés à une hauteur d'environ 150 à 800 km au-dessus du niveau de la mer, en le plaçant dans la thermosphère terrestre, une région chaude dans la haute atmosphère et aussi dans l'hétérosphere, où la composition chimique varie avec la hauteur. D'une manière générale, la région F a la plus forte concentration d'électrons et d'ions libres partout dans l'atmosphère. On peut penser qu'il comprend deux couches, les couches F1 et F2. La région F est située directement au-dessus de la région E et sous la protonosphère. Il agit comme un réflecteur fiable des signaux radio car il n'est pas affecté par les conditions atmosphériques, bien que sa composition ionique varie avec le cycle des taches solaires. Il reflète les fréquences d'incident normal à la fréquence critique ou inférieure à celle-ci et absorbe partiellement des ondes de fréquence plus élevée.

The F region of the ionosphere is home to the F layer of ionization, also called the Appleton-Barnett layer, after the English physicist Edward Appleton and New Zealander Miles Barnett. As with other ionospheric sectors, 'layer' implies a concentration of plasma, while 'region' is the area that contains the said layer. The F region contains ionized gases at a height of around 150–800 km above sea level, placing it in the Earth’s thermosphere, a hot region in the upper atmosphere, and also in the heterosphere, where chemical composition varies with height. Generally speaking, the F region has the highest concentration of free electrons and ions anywhere in the atmosphere. It may be thought of as comprising two layers, the F1-and F2-layers. The F-region is located directly above the E region and below the protonosphere. It acts as a dependable reflector of radio signals as it is not affected by atmospheric conditions, although its ionic composition varies with the sunspot cycle. It reflects normal-incident frequencies at or below the critical frequency and partially absorbs waves of higher frequency.
