Athame
Un Athame ou Athamé est un poignard de cérémonie, avec une lame à double tranchant et généralement une poignée noire. C'est l'instrument rituel principal ou l'outil magique parmi plusieurs utilisés dans la religion de Wicca, et est également utilisé dans diverses traditions de sorcellerie néopagan. Un couteau à manches noires appelé "aréame" apparaît dans certaines versions de la Clé de Salomon, un grimoire originaire du Moyen Âge. Le athame est mentionné dans les écrits de Gerald Gardner dans les années 1950, qui prétendait avoir été initié à une tradition de sorcellerie survivante, New Forest Coven. Le athame était leur outil rituel le plus important, avec de nombreux usages, mais ne devait pas être utilisé pour la coupe physique réelle. On a spéculé que l'intérêt et l'expertise de Gardner dans les épées et les couteaux antiques, et en particulier les couteaux kris de la Malaisie et de l'Indonésie, pourraient avoir contribué à l'importance centrale de l'outil dans la Wicca moderne. D'autre part, le athame est l'un des quatre outils élémentaires de Wicca; Traditionnellement debout pour le feu, tout comme l'épée rituelle.
