Atomisme
L'atomisme est une philosophie naturelle développée dans plusieurs traditions anciennes. Les atomistes ont théorisé que la nature se compose de deux principes fondamentaux: l'atome et le vide. Contrairement à leur homonyme scientifique moderne dans la théorie atomique, les atomes philosophiques viennent dans une variété infinie de formes et de tailles, chacun indestructible, immuable et entouré par un vide où ils entrent en collision avec les autres ou s'accrochent formant un groupe. Des grappes de formes, d'arrangements et de positions différentes donnent lieu aux différentes substances macroscopiques dans le monde. Des références à la notion d'atomisme et de ses atomes se retrouvent dans l'Inde ancienne et dans la Grèce antique. En Inde, les écoles d'atomisation de Jain, Ajivika et Carvaka remontent au 6ème siècle avant notre ère. Les écoles de Nyaya et Vaisheshika ont ensuite développé des théories sur la façon dont les atomes se combinent dans des objets plus complexes. En Occident, l'atomisme a émergé au Vème siècle av. J.-C. avec Leucippus et Démocrite. La question de savoir si la culture indienne a influencé le grec ou vice versa ou si les deux ont évolué indépendamment est une question de contestation.
