Auxotrophie
Auxotrophie est l'incapacité d'un organisme à synthétiser un composé organique particulier requis pour sa croissance. Un auxotroph est un organisme qui affiche cette caractéristique; Auxotrophic est l'adjectif correspondant. Auxotrophie est l'inverse de la prototrophie, caractérisée par la capacité de synthétiser tous les composés nécessaires à la croissance. La méthode de réplique réalisée par Esther Lederberg comprenait des auxotrophes sensibles à la température; C'est-à-dire que leur capacité à synthétiser dépend de la température. Plusieurs auxotrophes peuvent également coexister en même temps, dans le même organisme. En génétique, on dit qu'une souche est auxotrophique si elle porte une mutation qui la rend incapable de synthétiser un composé essentiel. Par exemple, un mutant de levure avec un gène de voie de synthèse d'uracile inactivé est un auxotrole d'uracile. Une telle souche est incapable de synthétiser l'uracile et ne pourra se développer que si l'uracile peut être absorbé par l'environnement. Ceci est le contraire d'un prototype de l'uracile, ou dans ce cas une souche de type sauvage, qui peut encore croître en l'absence d'uracile.
